Yard Signs: Creative Ways to Make an Impact
The use of yard signs remains a campaigning staple in both local and national elections, probably because they are colorful, large, to-the-point, and, if properly placed, your political signs will be viewed by a very high number of potential voters. Places they are typically spotted range from the front yards of supporters’ homes and businesses to the sides of high traffic roads and in front of polling locations.
Yard signs are an effective and traditional way to campaign. To make the most of your election signs, it is important to think creatively. Placing them in the usual locations is fine, but doing something a little different will get you noticed in a new way.
One way to accomplish this is to make a totem pole with your campaign signs using rebar or some other tall, sturdy object. This creates a hard-to-miss focal point for passers-by and catches the voters’ attention. It will also help set your signs apart from the typical signs of the other candidates.
Another vote-getting idea is to line up your signs along the entrance to a major community event, such as a high school football game, much like you would see signs for a fruit stand lined up one after the other along the roadside. This creates repetition and ensures that your candidate’s name is seen by a large number of people. Placing your signs at a home-town event like this also associates your name to a sense of community support and values.
Designing your yard signs leaves a lot of room for creativity, but it is important to stick with a central campaign theme, which can include specific color combinations, logos, or artwork. Unique color choices and catchy slogans are great ways to grab the voters’ attention, but make sure you keep a simple, common theme throughout your advertising so as to “brand” your campaign. Doing this will make your election signs instantly recognizable and make your name familiar to voters.
One final tip- consider putting most of your yard signs out during one weekend to make an impact and get your campaign noticed. Then your presence as a candidate is recognized by the community. This sign strategy will gain attention for your campaign in a bigger way than if you were to put out a few of your campaign materials at a time. You want to make sure that when people drive to work Monday morning, they notice the newly planted signs and your run for office.
No matter what type of election you participate in, it is important to remember to make the biggest impact possible with the resources available to you. Set yourself apart from the other candidates. Think outside the box and be creative. What matters is that you make wise and effective choices with your campaign budget.
