Obamas’ First Dog Choice Questionable
The Obama’s have made the policy decision that dog lovers all over the world have been eagerly awaiting: They’ve chosen a first dog! In an interview with People Magazine the First Lady confirmed that the Obama’s will be adopting a dog sometime in April. The new first pup will be a rescued Portuguese water dog. Portuguese water dogs are known for being healthy, intelligent, loyal dogs. They were bred to accompany fishermen on their boats and are extremely active and excellent swimmers.
In earlier interviews President Obama had stated that he hoped to adopt a “mutt, like himself” from a rescue shelter. It is unfortunate that the Obamas have chosen a rare, pedigree dog. By choosing a Portuguese water dog President Obama is creating a demand for a rare breed. Prices for Portuguese water dogs will soar and people may be more likely to buy from objectionable breeders.
There are so many mixed breed dogs available for adoption in shelters that it is a shame President Obama is planning on adopting a purebred. According to the Humane Society of the United States 8-10 million cats and dogs enter shelters each year and 4-5 million of them are euthanized each year. Choosing such a rare breed dog sets a poor example for Americans to follow when shelters are so overloaded with unwanted mixed breeds. A quick search on petfinder.com found 4 Portuguese water dogs available for adoption, a low number in comparison to the thousands of Beagles, Labradors, Chihuahuas, and Pit Bulls.
