Which of the old Universal-type monsters do you find the least scary?
I never found the Mummy very scary. Let’s face it; anybody who could walk reasonably fast could get away from him. And he had one arm in a sling!
The only scary thing about what Dr. Victor Frankenstein did was the idea that it was possible, but Mary Wollestonecraft Shelley wrote her monster to be a thinking, literate creature with more “humanity” than his “creator” had, making a comment on the Prometheus myth of maybe defying the gods and helping the humans is a good idea. The only potentially scary ones were wolfman and Dracula, but the Frank Langella Dracula was finally scary/creepy, and the Wolfman was a tad ludicrous until An American Werewolf in London. There’s the idea, and then there’s getting the audience to sympathize with the victims of that idea. That second one is what so difficult that the failure stack up in the back storage room.
